Evidently it had spent a good 20 years propped up on its side in a shed in Melbourne, FL. I was scrolling through Craigslist in early March, bottom-feeding for interesting gear (as one does) and saw a listing for a Rhodes Stage Seventy Three. I figured I'd find something interesting Rhodes-y one day, so I kept in in the back of my mind for a few months.
Maybe it’s just unfamiliarity and the “mechanical” aspects that made me nervous. Not sure why, I’ve owned and currently own some instruments valued far higher than a basic Rhodes. But a vintage Rhodes has felt a little out of reach. I’m not a big keys player, but I’ve had tons of fun grabbing synths and samplers over the past 7 or so years, learning them, and then either keeping or flipping as time goes on. I’ve seen posts like this before where people have literally died before finishing their project, so my apologies if I leave you hanging. I’ll be posting updates as they come, so y’all can watch this trainwreck happen in real time.
Thought some people might be interested in watching a guy who has no clue what he’s doing rebuild a trashed Rhodes from 1980.
